Sleep is a necessity but comfort is a luxury. Why not combine the two? Orthopaedic mattresses are renowned for their ability to grant sleepers with nights of blissful comfort, through an intelligent structure that provides complete support for the whole body.

A good night’s sleep relies heavily upon the foundation we recline upon. We may feel exhausted after a long working day but without a suitable mattress, our overwhelming desire to drift off into dreamland and awake refreshed can often be hampered. Uneven, creaking mattresses are a common source of interrupted sleep, as we constantly toss and turn throughout the night, frustratingly searching for a comfortable position we can finally settle upon.

The Ortho Classic is a fine example of how a mattress can transform an adequate night’s sleep into supreme slumber. A bounty of benefits will greet you as you experience weightlessness, where every contour of your body is hugged in complete support, reducing pressure point pain and erasing tension.

Sleep is golden, often creating angelic faces at bedtime. More often than not though, it’s easy to dismiss the importance of beauty sleep and quality rest. But if we want to open our eyes to a morning free of fatigue and a day full of energy, then we have to ensure that we invest in a mattress that guides a clear way to relaxation and relief.

An orthopaedic mattress is like a lullaby for the body, a plump surface of quilted luxury that realigns the spine perfectly. It is beautifully hand tufted and finished with a gold leaf pattern that spreads itself out over a soft surface, adding a touch of opulence that reflects its sacred sensation.

The Ortho Classic has a faultless design that stands the test of time, bringing each sleeper the valuable gift of serenity. It’s a classic in every sense of the word. Move the Ortho Classic into your bedroom or browse through our entire orthopaedic mattress range, and make your dream of heavenly sleep a reality.

Reveal your adventurous streak and excite the senses with the addition of an impressive contemporary faux fur headboard. Choose from our Giraffe, Tiger, Leopard and Zebra prints and beautify your bedroom with the striking patterns worn by nature’s most majestic creatures.

The sumptuous softness of each Logan Faux Fur Headboard fits in perfectly with the already tactile bedroom environment of feather pillows, cushioned mattresses and smooth enveloping duvets. The faux fur headboard provides a soothing texture to rest tired backs against when turning the pages of a night time novel. Then, nestling into its velvety coat you can ease into a dreamy slumber full of cosy comfort.

The feisty pattern will also create an impressive focal point. So dare to make a statement packed with bold glamour, then stretch out, and gaze on at its splendour. Whether your new fur headboard is teamed with neutral walls as a standalone statement or inserted into an existing colour scheme, it can’t fail but to go unnoticed as it adapts perfectly to its new habitat.

To complete the look you could team your new headboard with a furry throw or a few texture- rich display cushions. If you already share your home with a feline friend, it becomes the perfect readymade accessory, curled up at the foot of the bed.

The trendy animal print also works well in children’s bedrooms, instantly introducing a playful, fun element that will appeal to both boys and girls. Whether you want to create a safari adventure themed room or a complimentary backdrop to a collection of cuddly toys, the faux fur headboard is ideal.

Whether it’s the slashed stripes of the tiger, the mosaic effect of the giraffe or the mischievous dots of the leopard, the allure of animal print will be difficult to resist. So go on, make your bedroom roar with style.

The addition of a Waverly Metal Bed Frame serves as a bold statement that lives up to its name, as on sight it certainly creates plenty of waves. Its simplicity is what makes it so impressive.

It benefits from a dynamic design that’s right on trend. A fluid shape mimics the character of slumber, where the sleeper floats peacefully away into dreamland. Its soft edged design brings the room a comfortable, relaxed feel that serves to help us unwind after a long, tiring day.

The bed frame encloses the bed and sleeper in perfect symmetry, as the eye traces its lines in unison, sweeping effortlessly across the top and bottom to break away from tradition. The Waverly Metal Bed Frame design makes a feature of the bed it supports; the design can be easily inserted into any bedroom environment, introducing clean lines that don’t tend to compete with the rest of the room but rather enhance its feel.

The fluid design of The Waverly can be teamed with virtually any existing décor. Choosing a bedspread that compliments its flowing lines would work well but is not essential, its simplicity means that it could just as easily be partnered with heavily patterned bedspreads or wallpaper for example, as it provides a refreshing balance within every existing style of bedroom.

So whether it takes pride of place in the master bedroom or waits peacefully in the guest room, ‘The Waverly Metal Bed Frame’ will slot into your home with ease and inbuilt flair. Its contemporary character never fails to breathe freshness into an interior.

A nautical themed room would work especially well for this design, so if your guest room is themed or you are lucky enough to live beside the sea then this metal bedframe design will really capture the charm that lies outside the window. However, if the horizon outside is not graced with a sparkling sea, the Waverly can recreate the shapes of soothing water inside.

Browse through our entire metal bed frame range, and whether you favour contemporary chic or ornate elegance, you’re bound to find something show stopping.

The Paris Metal Bed Frame is a shining example of a romantically inspired design, with its beautiful cursive swirls and delicacy; it clasps your double bed in the timelessness associated with French style. Create a luxury boudoir environment with just the single addition of a beautifully crafted bedroom accessory. The Paris Metal Bed Frame is full of fluid lines that easily capture the viewer’s attention, drawing the eye to what should be the main focal point of the bedroom.

If you want to introduce a feminine flair with a metal bed frame design, influenced by the most romantic city in the world, then the Paris Metal Bed Frame is ideal. A planned Valentine’s weekend in Paris could be continued when you arrive home to a little piece of borrowed Parisian style. Scattered with red rose petals and teamed with the beauty of a bed frame will make for a dream scene.

Creating a sturdy, long lasting simplicity, together with a calming, neutral shade, the Paris Metal Bed Frame fits easily into any bedroom environment, so that any colour of bedspread will match with the bedframe’s character. For a romantic twist, especially for Valentine’s Day, silk sheets in a deep red shade would dress the frame up perfectly, providing a fantastic finishing touch to a romantic evening in.

Treat your partner to a readymade luxury boudoir with the all-important introduction of a Paris Metal Bed Frame. It will serve as a welcome surprise to mark a moment that will last a lifetime.

As we spend on average 1/3 of our lives sleeping, comfort in the bedroom should come second to none, but when you have been sleeping on a mattress every day for years and years, it’s hard to know when it’s right time to think about replacing it. Although your mattress will only fractionally deteriorate from one day to the next, at some point the time will come when it’s time to buy a new one.

An average mattress lifespan is around ten years – however this varies depending on the quality of the mattress when it was first bought. As you might of guessed, the more expensive the mattress, the longer life you will get out of it, and although good quality mattresses seem to be a lot of money – sleeping on a poor quality mattress can result in poor sleep and health.

To help you to decide if you need a new mattress, you can look for a few tell tail signs that your mattress is on its last legs! Here are a few things to start looking for:

Sagging across the middle third of the mattress

Lumpy sections

You wake up tired, un-refreshed or like you have not been to sleep at all!

The edge of the mattress no longer provides support

Obvious dips and depressions

Springs are visible or can be felt

You wake up with stiff, achy or sore muscles and joints

Back pain

You regularly wake up during the night

The mattress makes creaking noises

Rips or tears in the surface or the seams of the mattress

You tend to sleep better away from home

You are over the age of 40 and your mattress is five to seven years old -remember, your body tolerates less pressure as it ages.

Each of the above signs will also lessen your quality of sleep, draining the energy away from you and replacing it with low concentration and drowsiness, which is not good for you, or the people around you!

So if you find your mattress is a culprit of the above, or that it has been used as a trampoline for too long, we would recommend one of our memory foam mattresses which start from £165. These high-density memory foam mattresses get to know your body in minutes, softening in response to your body’s natural warmth and moulding to your shape for incredible comfort – what else could you need?

Beds have dramatically changed and improved throughout history, taking steps from the 17th century with thin straw stuffed mattresses to luxury leather beds here in the twenty first. Having unknowingly taken our modern contemporary beds for granted, sit back, or lie back, and let us tell you a story.

In the 13th century the first basic beds were introduced with canopies suspended from beams by ropes allowing people to be raised from the ground. Although there were many benefits to being raised from the ground, this phenomenon took a long time to become a common way of sleeping. Imagine the back pain!

The 15th century however introduced the wooden four poster bed, which was specifically designed and usually had featured pillars with beautiful ornate engravings in the wood. The four poster bed was commonly known as the ‘bed of kings’ because of the wealthy image it gave. This is probably why people still aspire to own one now!

In the rustic bedroom, bugs and small rodents were accepted as a common pest until the 18th century and although the four poster bed was one of the most wanted beds, the cast iron bed was developed as they realised the benefits of a sleeping space less attractive to bugs. With a bed frame made fully of iron and a mattress of cotton, the bed bugs slowly stopped to bite.

In 1900 William Lawrence Murphy introduced the Murphy Bed that folded into a wardrobe. This new way of sleeping and living is still used today.

Then passing year by year from the 30s to 80s watching the likes of the water bed, air bed, futons and sofa beds coming in and out of fashion, the Queen size bed was created.

Now with having the biggest bed and the most space we’ve ever had, the twenty first century offers the choice of comfort and design; at Bishops Beds you can have both. With over 30 years’ experience in designing, manufacturing and supplying, you can choose one from either our contemporary wooden beds or decorative metal bed collections to suit the style of your home.

Having guests stay overnight after a dinner party or after a special occasion if they have far to travel can seem like a great gesture of good will and the solution to travel logistics. However, unlike Brad and Angelina, not all of us have 12 spare guest rooms and chamber maids to make up the beds in preparation for your guests staying.

That’s why the Bed Doctor has outlined his top tips for preparing your house for having guests stay for the night.

First of all – you need to ensure that you have the space to sleep your guests. If you don’t have a spare bedroom, or you do but it is filled to the ceiling with winter coats, boxes, old recipe books and that collection of Arnold Schwarzenegger videos that you aren’t quite ready to dispose of – then your living room space is a great place to start.

Now, although you have the space in your living room, you don’t think it is really appropriate to ask your Aunty and Uncle to sleep on the sofa with an old blanket that you’ve managed to dig out of your ‘spare room’. A great solution to this problem is buying a foldaway bed which will provide great comfort for an overnight stay and then can be tucked away after the guests have left.

Bishops Beds have a fantastic Budget foldaway bed for this very occasion.

Budget Foldaway Bed

This budget metal fold up bed is simple but sturdy and is ideal for a guest bed. The metal bed is compact enough to store away in a cupboard and comes with a full foam mattress. When opened, the bed is 186cm long, 69cm wide and 27cm high and when closed, the bed is 69cm wide, 10cm deep and 92cm high.

Next on your to do list should be ensuring you have enough blankets, duvets, sheets and pillows. On some occasions, using a sleeping bag will be sufficient for your guests to sleep in on the guest bed, but some guests may need a little extra comfort for a great night sleep.

A good pillow can prevent your guests tossing and turning in discomfort all night. To ensure maximum comfort for your guests, The Bed Doctor recommends the Memflake memory foam pillow by Concept.

This memory foam pillow from Concept has many benefits to ensure a great night sleep. It responds to and supports the neck, relieves pressure and promotes good body circulation.

If you do have the space in a spare room, but do not want to commit to turning it into a full time spare bedroom, the Bed Doctor recommends Bishops Beds bestselling Guest bed – the Versailles Daybed.

The new Versailles Daybed from Julian Bowen comes with a handy underbed which is easily stored until needed. The Daybed is finished in a stone white and has a detailed surround. The Versailles Daybed looks stunning as a lounger or as a bed.

Now that you have the sleeping arrangements sorted, it’s time to add the finishing touches so that your guests feel comfortable and at ease in your home.

Alarm clocks and reading lamps are great extras to add a little something for your guests. Putting yourself in their position often helps you decide on how much or how little effort you need to go to for their overnight stay.

Finally, lay out some clean, dry towels where your guests will be staying and why not leave out some reading material to help your guests completely relax and unwind, ensuring a comfortable time for everyone.
